Centred on the physical and conceptual elements of fire, visual art will be spilling out of the ‘art appreciation chill out tent’, equipped with low seating and poetry to help you kick back and take it all in. This space will be alive with visual art throughout the day and evening and will include sculpture, photography, mixed media, installation, and costume.

The Fire Festival is proud to celebrate:

Katie Hawker (Installation artist/sculptor)

What motivates me in my art work is the social study of people. My work revolves around society and communities within society. I am also interested with how society as a whole interacts with the art world.
Most of my work is interactive and accessible to as many a possible and this has led me to think about art outside the gallery.
Ideals within society and the individual is another part of my work, sub cultures who reject the developing world and communities that this activism has created. The growth of society; how we live and breed relating to the culture of organic growth such as mould and fungi. This directly relates to the piece called ‘Progression from perfection’.
I use many different materials in my work and use many different issues or actions to inspire me. At present I am looking at myths we create to explain natural phenomenon relating to the current issues of global warming.

Photograms are shadows of light imprinted on
photographic paper. They are essentially cameraless
images.

Firegrams are images created through different
sources of fire. Bomb fuses, lighter fluid, vodka, and
fountain fireworks are some of the objects used. The
random aspect of fire creates a variety of forms.
Although there is an attempt to destroy the
photographic form, the chaos remains contained within
the borders of the silver gelatin emulsion.

RJ Fernandez is a Filipino photographer based in the
UK.  She is also known as the artist/dj Mayumi Masaya.

Marcus Voss (Photographer)

I mainly work in the areas of digital illustration and motion graphics, and I currently teach at the Arts Institute in Bournemouth. I combine my work in these fields with other mediums, including photography and film. I take an experimental approach, often using a wide variety of techniques to create and mould my ideas. As a result, my work can be of an abstract and organic nature.

I am currently involved in the Chrysalis Project, an Audio-Visual collective aimed at bridging the gap between live music performance and the Visual Arts. I have incorporated my photography into this project by focusing on the amalgamation of natural light and digitized light patterns. For this reason, fire in motion provides a great source of inspiration to me.

Katja Gless (Costume artist)

I am currently in my second year at the Art Institute at Bournemouth, studying "Costume for the Screen and Stage". Over the last year I have been working with a variety of theatres and fares. The festival scene is a new experience for me and I am excited to be a part of it.

Designing Costumes for The Fire Festival is the perfect opportunity for me to use the knowledge I have earned over the last year. I have gathered a fantastic group of makers and together we will contribute towards this exciting arts event

About my practise in general

My practise is contemporary based. I' m mainly specialized in
photography, video art & fine art. Most of my work deals with social
aspects.

Anyway, I guess it' s most important to identify & enjoy what you do.

Ben Dix (Artist)

My work crosses a range of different medium, including photography, film and
animation. I always seek out unusual subject matter, and strive to capture
the atmosphere and essence of a given moment in time. I love to play with
different lighting in my work, and use natural sources of light wherever
possible. A lot of my work focuses on the UK festival circuit, and I have
recently collaborated on the forthcoming Chrysalis project. The project
provides an excellent platform through which to explore the interplay
between music and the visual arts. My involvement is through VJing, which
gives me a great opportunity to combine my different art forms in the form
of live audio-visual performance.

The recently formed Spinsters bring together three artists in hooping and poi. Their free and energetic style reflects a battle of nature’s elements that forms a striking visual piece with LED lighting. The triplet combines fluid dance movement with stratified spinning skills to create a captivating performance.

The freestyle act comprises of throws with the hoop, spinning with two hoops and will travel from a slow moving spin to fast and vigorous movements.
